Costa Del SolThe Costa del Sol is one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations covering 100 miles of coastline to the east and west of Malaga city. Wonderful beaches and an ideal climate make it the perfect year round place for sun worshipers and water sports devotees. The eastern side of the Costa del Sol stretches along 54 kilometres with cliffs of up to 200 metres high. Nerja is the most popular town on this side of the coast with many beautiful, Spanish pueblos encircling its boarder. One pueblo well worth a visit is Frigiliana; white washed houses and beautiful scenery add to the charm of this typical Spanish mountain village. The Nerja caves also make this area attractive to tourists. Spectacular stallagnites are to be found in this cave which is open to the public and which hosts an annual music and dance festival within its famous grotto. The town itself retains much of its Spanish tradition, with narrow winding streets and white washed houses filled with colourful Geraniums and Bougainvilla. There are also a number of coves with lovely beaches to be found in this area. Malaga is the capital of the Costa del Sol, the birth place of Picasso. It is Spain’s second largest port and is steeped in history with narrow medieval streets and a variety of historical buildings adding to the charm of this Andalucian city.
To the west of Malaga stretching over 100km to the boarder of Cádiz is the most renowned part of the Costa del Sol; here you will find the resorts of Torremolinos noted for its clean beaches, variety of fish restaurants, various water sports and great night life.Benalmadena with its attractive marina incorporating Arabic architecture offers a large selection of bars, restaurants and nightclubs. There are many places of interest in this resort to include: Tivoli World, Selwo Marina, a casino, the Sea Life centre and the bull ring. A short drive inland you will find the picturesque village of Benalmadena Pueblo a favourite with many ex-pats who have made it their home. A short drive further along the coast and you come to the cosmopolitan town of Fuengirola, popular with the Spanish tourists who come to enjoy the summer months on the coast. It has one of the longest promenades on the Costa del Sol and has a wonderful variety of “Chiringuitos” beachside restaurants offering a varied selection of seafood. This resort has all services available to meet even the most demanding individual’s requirements. Ten minutes drive inland from Fuengirola is the charming village of Mijas, a traditional Spanish pueblo surrounded by mountains and providing impressive views of the coast.
Marbella, home to the rich and famous is probably the most well known of the Costa del Sol’s resorts. This exciting town offers stunning boulevards, parks and gardens as well as the Moorish streets of the old town. Great shops, bars, restaurants and nightlife guarantees nothing but the best of experiences in this modern, trendy town. Puerto Banus with its multi-million pound yachts, Ferraries parked on the quayside, seafood restaurants and of course designer boutiques along with fantastic nightlife are abundant here.
The town of Estepona is located at the western end of the Costa del. Once a fishing town it has remained one of the quieter beach resorts of the Costa. The old quarter is filled with narrow, cobbled streets while all the modern conveniences are located in the town centre. One of Andalucia’s greatest charms is its cuisine. Traditional dishes include “Gazpacho” (cold soup made with tomatoes, cucumber, garlic, peppers and olive oil), “Tortilla” (Spanish omelette), “Gambas pil-pil” (prawns cooked in olive oil with garlic and cayenne pepper), vegetable and meat stews, seafood, “Chorizo” (Spanish sausage made with garlic and spices), Serrano ham and of course a variety of tapas. The Costa del Sol also known as the Costa del Golf has over 70 golf courses 30 of which are situated along the coast. Championship courses include the famous Valderrama which hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup. If you are a golf enthusiast then this is the place for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
